Tasting and Pairings
Tasting Bourbon
What is a good Bourbon? There are many videos and reviews of Bourbon’s on YouTube, but it all comes down to personal taste. Some Bourbons have name recognition, some are considered rare or hard to get, but that doesn’t matter if you don’t like the Bourbon.
I always try to give a Bourbon a few different tries, before I make my mind up on it. So what Bourbon should you try? Any and all of them. You are the only one who can tell you if you will like a Bourbon. As you begin to taste different Bourbons, your preference may develop for certain styles( for example wheated or high rye), or flavor profiles.
I can give you some examples of bourbons I like, Redemption, Peerless, Blantons are just a few, but don’t take my word for it, go out and try some and make your own decision.
Pairing Bourbon with Food
Consider Flavor Profiles: Take into account the flavors present in both the bourbon and the food. Look for complementary or contrasting elements. For example, a sweeter bourbon with notes of caramel and vanilla may pair well with dishes that have rich, savory flavors, while a spicier bourbon can be balanced with dishes that have a touch of sweetness or smokiness.
Match Intensity: Match the intensity of the food with the intensity of the bourbon. Lighter-bodied bourbons may pair well with lighter dishes like seafood or salads, while fuller-bodied bourbons can stand up to heartier meats and robust flavors.
Think Regional: Consider the regional origins of both the bourbon and the food. Bourbon hailing from Kentucky, for instance, might pair exceptionally well with Southern cuisine like barbecued meats, cornbread, or pecan pie.
Complement with Contrasts: Contrasting flavors can create a dynamic pairing. For example, the sweetness of bourbon can balance the saltiness of cured meats or cheeses. Likewise, a spicy bourbon can provide a pleasant contrast to creamy or rich dishes.
Try Classic Pairings: Certain classic food pairings with bourbon have stood the test of time. For instance, a rich and buttery bourbon can be an excellent companion to dark chocolate or caramel desserts. Additionally, a well-crafted Old Fashioned cocktail can complement a wide range of dishes.
Experiment with Small Bites: If you're unsure about the pairing, start with small bites of food and sips of bourbon to see how they interact on your palate. This way, you can adjust the pairings to suit your personal preferences.
Be Mindful of Alcohol Content: Keep in mind the alcohol content of the bourbon when pairing with food. A higher proof bourbon might overpower delicate flavors, so consider the strength of the spirit in relation to the dish.
Personal Preference Matters: Ultimately, food and bourbon pairing is a subjective experience, so trust your taste buds and preferences. There are no hard and fast rules, and experimentation is part of the fun.
Remember, the goal of pairing food with bourbon is to create a pleasurable dining experience that enhances the flavors of both the food and the spirit. So, have fun exploring different combinations and enjoy the delightful journey of discovering your perfect bourbon and food pairings. Cheers!
